Q: How was your business started? OR If you did not start your business, how did you come into ownership of your company?

Argent Tape and Label was originally purchased by my husband as an investment. He is the sole owner of the company he founded as Argent International.  Argent Tape and Label experienced a reversal of fortune.  With sales falling from 6 million to $720K.  I convinced my husband to sell me the business.  It was just the challenge a retired special education teacher needed.

Q: How has your company grown and changed since becoming WBENC-Certified? What has been the greatest benefit of certification for you and your company?

Argent Tape and Label has grown into a business with $6.2 million dollars in sales.  Our current motto: 10 by 20. This means $10 million in sales by 2020.  There are 2 benefits that I have experienced since becoming a WBENC-Certified WBE.  The first is the networking opportunities made available to certified WBEs; the second, getting to meet likeminded women entrepreneurs.

Q: What values have led to and continue to support your business acumen?

The values that have led and continue to support my business acumen are honesty, integrity and creating value for those around me.

Q: What are some of the bigger challenges and barriers you’ve faced as a business owner? How have you overcome them?

A big challenge I faced early on was the economic downturn and banks’ hesitancy to loan money to any company, especially with the debt ratio that Argent Tape and Label had. When resources were scarce, the ability to use all my resources to the best of my ability, helped me overcome challenges.

Q: What advice do you have for a new entrepreneur?
My advice would be to keep pushing and moving forward. Write a vision, follow your vision and review your vision to ensure it makes sense.  My other piece of advice would be to read! For newly certified WBEs, they need to get involved. Join committees, attend events, participate in everything, get to know people, build your network.

Q: What do you do to prepare for the National Conference?
To prepare for the National Conference, you must know your audience, gather your resources, pack your items securely, inventory and pre-set up your display in the allotted space to make sure everything fits and looks good. Remember to pack comfortable shoes.

I approach the business fair floor by planning in advance who I want to see and visit. I do my research before we arrive and connect with them on LinkedIn. As I collect business cards, I spend a few minutes each night connecting with those people on social media (LinkedIn).
